Once again, we have sent a team of volunteers to collaborate with Mexican health care professionals from Tijuana and Mexico City at Clínica CER for a day of free surgeries. We also broadcasted an educational telemedicine conference from Clínica CER to UCSD Medical School and other remote participants in the medical field.
Our telemedicine conference was broadcast to 18 participants both at UCSD’s Altman CTRI building and other sites. Dr. Gosman presented with Dr. Tamara Suenaga, an orthodontist from Tijuana who has provided care for the patient, an 18 YO girl with Facial-Auriculo-Vertebral Spectrum (FAV) Craniofacial Microsomia, facial cleft and cleft palate. The doctors discussed her medical history and previous multidisciplinary care, including multiple surgeries done by Dr. Alicia Sigler, as well as facts about these craniofacial abnormalities and medical approaches to treating. They also discussed the steps of the cleft orthogantic surgery she would be undergoing. The broadcast included an interactive interview with the patient’s parents, who talked about her long-term care from a personal perspective. Participants could also view the actual surgery through a camera positioned over the operating room table.
